Internal Revenue Code Section 415(b)
 
Internal Revenue Code section 415(b) is a federal provision that limits the amount of annual retirement benefits that an individual can receive from a pension plan. Beginning in January 2015, retiring TSERS and LGERS members may be affected by these limits. The NC Retirement Systems has created a fact sheet to help members understand IRS Code 415(b) and make informed decisions about their retirement.
 
Internal Revenue Service Increases 2015 Contribution Limits
 
The Intenal Revenue Service has increased the limits taxpayers may make to their 401(k), 403(b), and most 457 plans for the 2015 tax year. Visit our NC Total Retirement Plans website for more information.
 
 
Digests for 2014 Legislative Session Now Available
 
Digests of the 2014 Legislation that affects members of the following North Carolina Retirement Systems are now available on our Laws & Legislation web page:
  •  Consolidated Judicial Retirement System (CJRS)
  • Firefighters' and Rescue Squad Workers' Pension Fund (FRSWPF)
  • Legislative Retirement System (LRS)
  • Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System (LGERS)
  • National Guard Pension Fund (NGPF)
  • Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement Systems (TSERS)

Highlights from the digests include:

  • The return of 5-year vesting for all TSERS and CJRS members
  • All TSERS, LGERS, CJRS and LRS refund payments paid on or after January 1, 2015, will include the member’s contributions plus applicable interest, regardless of the number of years of retirement service credit

Treasurer Cowell Launches New Retirement Option for Teachers and Educators

State Treasurer Janet Cowell and TIAA-CREF launched the North Carolina Public School Teachers' and Professional Educators Investment Plan, a statewide, supplemental 403(b) retirement program for the state's public K-12 educators.  Read the full release​


 
State Health Plan Revises Enrollment Process for Eligible Retiring Employees
 
The process has changed for enrolling eligible retiring employees who elect retiree health plan coverage through the State Health Plan. If you made an election during open enrollment, this does not affect that election. Click here for more information.
