Holder Education and Reporting
Companies doing business in North Carolina are obligated to review their financial accounts annually and to determine if they are holding qualified unclaimed property. If they are, the companies are required to file a Holder Report with the Unclaimed Property Division, and to remit the unclaimed property to the Department of State Treasurer.
HOLDER EDUCATION EFFORTS
Helping Companies Be Compliant
We are committed to educating and assisting unclaimed property holders with their reporting obligations. Our website is designed to guide holders to the instructions and forms needed to file unclaimed property reports each year.
Our Holder Education Program provides holders with the information and resources needed to understand their statutory requirements, to file reports, and to remain compliant with the Unclaimed Property laws. See links to the right for many of these resources.
Check here often for Holder Education seminars and updates on issues relevant to unclaimed property holders.
THE UNCLAIMED PROPERTY FUND
Safekeeping Unclaimed Property
All unclaimed property remitted to the state is deposited into the Unclaimed Property Fund. Most unclaimed property is money, while some unclaimed property is tangible items such as coins or jewelry. Tangible property is sold through a
bid process or retail sales at the
State Surplus Facility.
Proceeds from these sales are deposited in to fund, and the amounts entered into the database under the owner’s name. The owner would be due this cash amount.
Interest earnings on the funds are invested to the North Carolina State Educational Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) to provide grants and loans to worthy and needy North Carolina students in state-supported institutions of higher education.
CLAIMING YOUR CASH
The NC Cash Program
Individuals and businesses can have unclaimed property. The NC Cash Program tries to reunite rightful owners with their unclaimed property by bringing our database of properties to outreach events, by proactively searching for owners and returning their property. Search our database to see if you or your business has unclaimed property waiting for you in the fund.
